About Us

Darryn found me on his doorstep one
evening after getting a haircut. I was waiting for his
roommate to answer the door when he walked up and asked me who I
was. The connection was like recognizing a lost memory,
like finding family. For many years, in fact, people who
saw us together would often ask us if we were siblings. It
was like that, as though we had been born together and had
endured a strange but forgettable time of being apart.
That night I should have
reminded him, "I'm the one."
I had just moved back to South Carolina
after a year of looking for adventure as an exchange
student at the University of Maine in Orono, near Bangor. I moved
to Maine with one of those big, hairy mountain men in mind, or at
least a good story in Stephen King country. Orono gave
me both and helped me find some of myself in the
process. When I moved back, Darryn was living at
Three Rivers apartments near Columbia with a good friend from high school,
who was enrolled with me in the same philosophy class at USC.
She invited me to a get together with some friends in Five
Points and that's when Darryn and I met.
Fifteen years later, I know Darryn
was the person I
had been waiting for on that doorstep. He was the
one I had always been waiting for.
