Our First House
2723 Old Whitehall Road, Charlotte NC

We bought Olde Whitehall in December of 2002, just after a big ice storm hit NC and shut down Charlotte schools for almost two weeks.  The joke is that we basically bought the house from our friends, Dave and Del, and that we had spent a great deal of time in this house when they owned it.  Spot practically grew up here, playing with his friend, Ripken.  Dave and Del had sold it, and the new owner only kept it for two years before we took over.  We just happened to drive by with our real estate agent and there it was, the easiest commission our agent ever made.  Dave did a great job setting up the yard and garden.  His plan was just right; all Jen needed to do was obsess over an already great foundation of plantings and beds.  The inside needed a little updating to Jen and Darryn style, but the bones of this house were great, and we loved every minute of painting, project planning, creating, and sharing it with our friends.  And luckily, Lowe's was right around the corner.

Front Entrance After

Red is a color of welcome and good luck, so we repainted the foyer and front door.  New wood floors extended into the foyer and guest hallway.  It took Jen three years to get the front perennial gardens right.

Back Deck Before

Back Deck After

We added a new 5000 square foot deck with planter boxes and a cherry tree, and we enlarged the pond to approximately 1200 gallons with a  heavy-duty filtration and waterfall system.

Kitchen Before

Kitchen After

We removed the wallpaper and repainted everything, including the     existing cabinets and new window trim.  We installed a new ceramic tile countertop and backsplash (with the help of our friend, Brenda Johnson), wood floors, white enameled cast iron sink and faucet, and iron chandelier.

Living Room Before

Living Room After

Darryn built a new oak mantel for the living room fireplace.
We also custom built the votive candle holder above the fireplace,
painted the brick, installed gas logs, replaced the ceiling fan
(in here and in the master bedroom), and replaced the existing french doors.  Dave's stained glass window arch ended up
as a beautiful piece over the guest bed.

Master Bath Before

Master Bath and Bedroom After

We replaced the master bath countertop and faucets, built custom storage cabinets near the bathroom ceiling, and replaced all mirrored folding doors in the bedroom and bath with standard swing doors.  We also ran the new  wood floors into the master bedroom.   Dave's stained glass window was donated to an auction to raise money for his son's liver transplant.
