Christchurch
These pictures are from in and around
Christchurch during 1996, my year on the South
Island of New Zealand. I lived in a
three-bedroom flat
on Peer Street
with Tess, a Kiwi, and Laura Waxman, a fellow
American from Minnesota. Darryn was also able
to join the household during his summer break in
June and July. I spent my year taking a
masters degree in Education as a visiting Fulbright
Scholar. Sometimes I walked to my office at
the University of Canterbury through Ilam
Gardens,
where Heavenly Creatures was filmed.
Christchurch is known as the most British of New
Zealand's cities with strong farming roots on the
Canterbury plains. Tess' dad was a deer
farmer, in fact, one of the area's common agricultural
occupations.

Akaroa
Occasionally, we
took a break from work to visit nearby towns like Akaroa.
You may notice that some pictures were taken in February
during the summer
and some were taken in June during New Zealand's
winter.
Taylor's Mistake
This was a
walk (I call it major hike, but no Kiwi would) along
the sea cliffs next to Taylor's Mistake, a coastal
area so named because Captain Taylor mistook it for
Lyttelton Harbor.
Port Hills Reserve
Again...a
major hike for me. We started at the Cashmere
Lookout and walked past the Sign of the Takahe, one
of several park rest houses (all named after birds),
into the reserve. There, after tramping a good
many hours up and over the hills, we found a
breathtaking view of Lyttelton Harbor
on the other side.
